Laser Hair Removal Q & A

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal works by using heat to inhibit hair growth. When light from the laser hits your skin, your skin’s melanin absorbs it and converts the energy into heat. This heat simultaneously removes existing hair and damages the hair follicles, stopping future hair growth.

The laser comes from a handheld device that your provider holds against your skin. Depending on the area you’re treating, the procedure may take a few minutes to a few hours.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal isn’t permanent, but it will inhibit hair growth for an extended period of time. To get the look and feel you desire, you’ll likely have to attend 2-6 treatments at first. Once your initial treatments are done, you’ll only need to come in from time to time for maintenance work.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

During the procedure, you may experience some discomfort, such as a sensation of a warm pricking. To help alleviate any discomfort, your physician will likely apply a cooling gel or use a laser device that features a cooling tip.

What should I expect after the treatment?

After your treatment, your skin will be sensitive — and possibly red and a little swollen — for a few hours. For immediate relief, try applying an ice pack to your skin. Over the next six weeks, you should be careful of sun exposure. Strictly avoid tanning beds, and when you go out, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen. You’ll notice over the following days and weeks that hair in the treated areas will continue to fall out.

Am I a candidate for laser hair removal?

Before you can book an appointment for laser hair removal, you’ll meet with a health specialist at Broward ENT Services to discuss a number of topics, including:

  • Past hair removal treatments
  • Your history of scarring and skin disorders
  • Any medications you’re taking
  • Your expectations
  • The risks and rewards of laser hair removal

After discussing all of this with you, your health specialist will take photos of your skin in the areas you wish to have hair removed. They will then use these photos to plan your treatment and assess your potential results.
